Their mother star was going to explode.

Some of them managed to get away onboard gigantic spaceships, former space stations turned into vehicles in a great rush. Faster than light, they made their way throug space and time, finally finding a fitting enough planet.

While most of them were in long term sleep, a little crew started creating a more comfortable environment. When everything was ready, they woke people up and move them to this new world.

Their mother star was still there, like nothing has happened, because the burst of the explosion was still on its way. But, on a very sad day, it finally turned into a nova, recalling them their terrible loss.
